[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

It had to happen. It gets kind of heckers vicious in the chorus though.

agard:

So I went down ANZAC drain today… right up to the end. Was absolutely astonished at what I found… a huge grand chamber with a chandelier that someone had made… candles everywhere, chairs, carpet, empty beer bottles, an altar with Cave Clan trophies all over it, a Cave Clan guestbook & memorial… and just generally cool shit. I had a look around and broke the camera out and tried some shots…

Was playing around with my new 580EXii flash as a master to the 430EXii. Definitely comes in handy having two flashes but I think I might need an ETTL cable as the whole ‘line of sight’ thing can be kind of frustrating at times.

There were a couple of pipes down there that look worth exploring but I don’t want to press any further until I have a companion.

Kept half expecting someone to show up while I was down there snapping away. I lost track of time and on the way out towards the end of the entrance I noticed the tide was coming in… and fast! I had to take my shoes & socks off, roll up my pants and walk through ankle-deep water to get out… I don’t know how far it was going to come up but I didn’t want to hang around and find out.

Looking forward to going back down there. Would love to take some friends down for some beers, or alternatively… would LOVE to join this Cave Clan… still haven’t heard back from them yet.

Need to work on my exposures a bit more perhaps even start playing with white/balance or colour settings… still at least I’m shooting all in manaul.

tri-attack asked: Thank you for your post (that was picked up by Brisbane or Death). Seriously. I needed to hear that.

Thanks bro, we all did. But I desprately hope it spurred a few people into action to do anything, something. Nothing is going to change if we all just sit here getting our jimmies rustled on tumblr and reblogging shit.

» BRISBANE OR DEATH: Brisbane is Brisbane

tri-attack:

Goodsniff:

Brisbane has got so much fucking potential to be Brisbane, culturally. Not laidback Melbourne or Sydney with thongs on.

Even on a broader scale, this whole cunt of country has the potential to have the coolest culture scene. Yet we all just run along consuming what’s put in front of us and not really thinking outside the box. And by that I mean really properly outside the box.

Appreciate what’s been done in the past but look forward to the possibilities of creating something completely and utterly new. I’m talking in the sense of everything: art, street art, theatre, music, high and street fashion, comedy, radio, television, blog, vlogs, journalism, everything. Or create a totally new medium. Something nobody has ever done before. It’s so possible.

There’s a few tiny rays of sunshine coming out of Queensland’s butthole at the moment. One is the music scene, which is having a mini renaissance like nobodies business. But even that, when you get down to it, it’s essentially just indie pop. Why not create something uniquely Brisbane/Aussie/Jesus fucking christ? Another is GOMA. Yeah GOMA. Then there is is the games scene. There’s been a little hive of games design companies setting up around Brisbane. There’s also the software company Euclideon who got a $2 million funding from the Federal Government to develop a rendering system for games, which may revolutionise the global gaming industry. Then the other is the Skillsintime comedy crew. As in the guy who did Jaydos. But they make other grotty as stuff which is heaps weird and amazing. The shit they make is so Brisbane, you literally can’t get that weird arse humour anywhere else.

Observation: The best art movements come out of when people are fighting or rebelling against something. Guhh this sounds so wanky but we’d be fighting against the lack of Australian culture.

We had a bit to fight for once. It was against the violence of the police force in the 80’s, that spurred the creation of the “Cane Toad Times”. It was satire and journalism that was simply Queensland. I keep a picture of it on my bookshelf to remind me of the potential we have here.

So yes all of that stuff is unique. But even in the big scheme of things, it was only subtly unique inside it’s little bubble of Australian style western culture. I want people to think bigger. Way bigger. Look beyond how we can contribute to the generic conventions of culture we’ve set in place in Brisbane, and actually question the conventions in the first place. Really shake things up.

I want people to come to Brisbane one day and experience something that can’t get anywhere else in the world. I want people to stop bitching and moaning about how there’s nothing to do here. Because there is if you know where to look, and it could be hella better if you shut your gob and did something productive about it.

We need to band together and get people in the right mindset about this. There needs to be a conscious realisation and a revolution. And it needs to be grassroots. Even form a manifesto for fucks sake. I’m sick and tired of just sitting at a computer, or working on making this amazing place even more amazing with my little one-man projects, wishing I could find people in this city that want to make it unique. Where are all you dirty dogs hiding.

TL:DR cunt?

Brisbane is so far overdue for a cultural renaissance. And it’s not going to come from the councils and governments pumping money in laneway projects and theatre companies. It has to be grassroots. So. Much. Potential.

Afternote:

I know there are far more important things in this city and state, than culture. Land rights, homelessness, cost of living, for some reason bikies now; and various first world middle class problems we all whine about everyday. But under all that, culture matters. Culture can change everything for the better because it keeps people healthy. Like all kinds of healthy. And if anyone did bother to read any of that rant that just came out of nowhere, holla at me bro.

There it is folks. Goodsniff lays it out like it is. This is almost exactly why I started this blog some three years ago. I wanted to show people in this town that we have some cool fucking shit going on; shit that Melbourne and Sydney don’t have, if only you bothered to look. My thinking was that if I couldn’t find anything unique to like about Brisbane than this place was basically dead to me » Brisbane or Death.

Well said, Goodsniff.

This is perfect. So eloquently said, and so Australian-ly self aware too. I’ve been looking for a something to get behind in Brisbane for a short while now… but everything I’ve come across has been too preachy (LET’S MAKE ART POLITICAL) or too wanky (LET’S MAKE ART OBSCURE AND OFFPUTTING). But what Goodsniff is proposing - is that we just get out and make art. Make the culture ourselves instead of complaining about the lack of it (nor waiting for the government to give them handouts to do it).

Just knowing there are Brisbanites out there like that who feel like this, encourages me so much. Thank you. Let’s rebel. Not to hurt or confuse or to upset… but to make Brisbane a more vibrant, friendly, and wonderful place to live. I love my city and the people in it (even those that I don’t agree with or wish me harm).

Let’s get out there and do something thoughtful.

Righteous. All I ask is please don’t let these ideas drift away as you go back to scrolling through tumblr feeds. Roll out of here and make or do something exciting.

If you can recognise even one I’ll take comfort in that. If there are anymore 7+ piece bands I am going to kick someone in nuts though.

ZH: …So it’s weird to be like, “Our band is like the internet!” But actually it kind of is: You have all the lowest-level activity side-by-side with the highest intellect also happening within the same realm.

Pitchfork: That’s easily the most fascinating thing about the internet to me— you’re the same two seconds away from watching TED lectures or some porn.

ZH: Totally. And people are doing both those things at once. We want our music to work the same way: all at once.

— Pitchfork interview with Zach Hill from Death Grips.

THIS IS VERY DAMN ACCURATE.
